Julia Stamberger was working at United Airlines when she hit on the idea of replacing quickly perishable in-flight meals with healthy foods that had a longer shelf life — a solution that saves the carrier money.
Just over a year ago, she and her business partner, Pam Jelaca, left the airline to form GoPicnic. United is still a major client, as is Alaska Airlines. But now the two are starting to take their "boxed picnic meals" beyond the airline industry and into the corporate and hospitality markets.
Their foods, everything from granola to apple sauce to deli-sliced salami, require neither preparation nor refrigeration. The company also focuses on health: products contain no transfats or artificial color or flavors.
