Chicago.com Owner Josh Metnick on His Prized Piece of Digital Real Estate

Metnick — who sold Guitar.com to Guitar Center and who two years ago added Illinois.com to his domain-name arsenal — talks here about how he's monetizing the city site, how many hits it gets and what he thinks it might be worth today (his purchase price from an engineer in California in 2001 was in the "mid six figures"). Not surprisingly, Metnick says 70% of the visits to Chicago.com are tourism-related; the other 30% are people looking for local information. He also explained what he's trying to accomplish with the assocation of city sites he helped form, which includes LosAngeles.com and Budapest.com, among over 100 others.

The conversation took place at the Goose Island brewpub during Chicago Beta, a meet-up of local entrepreneurs.

Metnick is chairman of Midwest Business Inc., publisher of MidwestBusiness.com. You can also read Metnick's profile at Freshwater Venture
