Case Study: How a Small Business Owner Works With a Consultant

Outdoor-supplies retailer Uncle Dan's is a local Chicago favorite. But owner Brent Weiss thought he could use some help systematizing his business without losing what makes it unique. Here's how he's working to bring more order to his stores with consultant Michael Kramer of the Win Big Institute.

Weiss recently opened his fourth Uncle Dan's, which is located on Southport just south of Addison. He's trying to bring more formalized processes to his retail outlet, with several goals in mind:

  1. Run a more efficient and thereby more profitable operation.
  2. Free his employees up to spend less time on organizational issues and more time with customers.
  3. Establish a system that can be replicated should he decide to sell the company or go the franchising route.
