A Yale MD and Harvard MBA, Kao is a leading authority on organizational transformation and digital media. Here he discusses topics like hotspots and silicon valley drawn from his new book, "Innovation Nation." Part 1 of 2.

Dubbed "Mr. Creativity" and "a serial innovator" by The Economist , Dr. John Kao describes his job description as "instigator of new things." He is author of the best-selling Jamming: The Art and Discipline of Business Creativity, a BusinessWeek best-seller that has been published in a dozen languages, and Innovation Nation , published in October, 2007.

Kao has a BA from Yale College, an MD from Yale Medical School, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He taught at HBS from 1982-96, where he specialized in innovation and entrepreneurship. He has also held faculty appointments at the MIT Media Lab, Yale College, and the US Naval Postgraduate School.

Dr. Kao's new book, Innovation Nation , describes the challenges America faces in attempting to reinvent its innovation edge at a time in which many nations are racing towards a new high ground shaped by innovation.
