The Treasure Hunter

When it comes to finding things like Japanese textiles and African ceramics, world traveler and art dealer Douglas Dawson will only work with people he knows — or people who know what they have; How to smell a fake.

The Douglas Dawson Gallery specializes in what it calls "ethnographica": that is, ancient and historic non-western art. Dawson's interior and exterior spaces are filled with everything from Indonesian stones to an African hunter's tunic. An "ex-hippie potter" whose clients include numerous museums, he says the days of finding pieces in remote jungle societies are long gone. In fact, many exotic objects are found right here in the States.
